New Rochelle, NY Events

Ward Elementary school has over 1000 students in New Rochelle, NY and is built on the theme of “International Peace Magnet.” Through the joint efforts of the Peace Education Coordinator, Irene Kabot, the Prinicpal, Ken Regan, and Conflict Resolution Specialist, Tara Fishler, they will be participating in Conflict Resolution Day by having their K-5 teachers do lessons from “Adventures in Peacemaking”,

by William Kreidler. The kindergarten students will make hats to show the types of

hats they would wear to keep the peace, from the “Many Hats” activity. The 1st

grade will make Peace Puppets. The 2nd grade will write about “What peace means to me.” The 3rd grade will make Peace Posters. The 4th grade will write

Peace Poems and the 5th grade will create Superheroes for Peace. Selected projects will be displayed on a “Peace Bulletin Board” in school. Additional efforts are underway to present to faculty about diversity and revitalize their peer mediation program.

The 4 and 5 year old children at JCC (Jewish Community Center) in New Rochelle discussed what they thought “Peace” meant. Most thought it meant to be quiet.  One child thought it meant being nice to each other. Then special guest/mom, Tara Fishler, read “The Peace Book” by Todd Parr.  After the story, they discussed again what “Peace” meant. They understood that it means appreciating differences in people including what they wear and where they live. They saw how being kind to the environment and each other can bring about peace. The teachers liked the book so much they plan to get the Director to order the book for the school.

In addition, The Westchester Bar ADR committee had people at tables in the Westchester County Courthouse in White Plains, NY, handing out materials about mediation.

ASJA Observes Conflict Resolution Day Thursday, October 16, 2008

The Association for Student Judicial Affairs honors National Conflict Resolution Day and acknowledges the Association for Conflict Resolution (ACR) and collaborating groups for early and ongoing efforts to increase public awareness about conflict resolution.

As an Association, ASJA has made great strides over the years to promote conflict resolution skills and processes as vital competencies for both professional conduct administrators and students. Significant ASJA efforts have culminated in an organizational name change from the "Association for Student Judicial Affairs" to the more inclusive "Association for Student Conduct Administration" together with the adoption of a new Mission Statement that for the first time promotes innovative conflict management programs, and references mediation and restorative justice concepts as important options for managing student conflict and conduct. The 2009 Annual Conference will further challenge ASJA members to "Transform Our Practice for the Future" through inclusive, diverse and creative student development efforts that balance traditional, fair due process requirements with meaningful conflict resolution practices. Moreover, ASJA recently held a Conflict Resolution Summit in September to strategically shape the Association's next steps to grow ASJA initiatives that expand the ability of student conduct administrators to effectively meet student needs in an inclusive, educational, and just fashion. The Summit Report to the ASJA Board will be posted on the ASJA website this fall.

We encourage our members to observe Conflict Resolution Day by recognizing individuals and groups who contribute to the healthy resolution of conflict on campus through administrative practices, teaching, research, dialogue, personal efforts, and formal programs. We further invite you to recommit yourself to collaborative dialogue with other professionals and students to further conflict resolution efforts in the year to come. Those institutions actively engaged in conflict resolution work are invited to share stories of how your campuses celebrate Conflict Resolution Day with ASJA  http://www.asjaonline.org/contact/ so that we can collect and recognize outstanding CR efforts in your communities.

South Carolina

Here comes “Conflict Resolution Day” in South Carolina! The newest Chapter of ACR is working hard to reach out to share and celebrate the message of ADR. ACR-SC has partnered with the Columbia Community Mediation Center and will be sponsoring a community breakfast to thank our supporters and enhance public awareness. The Governor of SC, Mark Sanford, will also honor ACR-SC by presenting a 2008 proclamation for “Conflict Resolution Day.”
